The Hamilton Island Resort, a Iconic Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by American Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the family owners has built in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, featuring a substantial array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.

The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
