‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s journey from injury table to scoring with Athletic Bilbao

Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. The son of the one-time rival player his father and a season ticket holder at the club that are now his rivals, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that developed the Arsenal manager, Xabi Alonso and the tactician. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after his top-level debut in August 2018, he went through a serious knee problem, dropped, a demotion and a return before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of the club’s history.
“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the top level but with every stage you progress through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his bow and February 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and my knee gave way.
“A massive setback but I reflect on it as a turning point because it made me change the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it helps. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not about neglect, but I did the sessions and then go home, typical youth behavior. At the complex, you have everything, so do everything. Practice, prevention. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: perform them.
“At the top level you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players countless occasions. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”
You also have to play. The striker moved upset in the pandemic season, aged 23, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he netted three goals in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and if one day a vacancy arises for your role, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Particularly after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. From top scorer with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
