A Tragic Transformation Just One Year Has Made in the United States

One year ago, the landscape was utterly separate. Ahead of the US presidential election, thoughtful residents could acknowledge America's serious imperfections – its inequities and disparity – yet they still could identify it as America. A democracy. A land where legal governance carried weight. A state guided by a honorable and decent official, notwithstanding his elderly years and increasing frailty.

These days, as October 2025 ends, numerous citizens barely recognize the nation we reside in. Individuals alleged as illegal immigrants are rounded up and pushed into vans, sometimes denied due process. The left side of the presidential residence – is being destroyed to build a lavish ballroom. The president is persecuting his political rivals or alleged foes and insisting the justice department surrender a huge total of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are being sent to US urban areas under fabricated reasons. The military command, relabeled the Department of War, has practically liberated itself of regular press examination as it spends possibly reaching close to a trillion USD in public funds. Institutions, attorney offices, news companies are yielding due to presidential intimidation, and rich magnates are treated like aristocracy.

“America, only a few months ahead of its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the brink into authoritarianism and extremism,” a noted author, stated recently. “In the end, more quickly than I thought feasible, it occurred in this country.”

One awakes with fresh terrors. And it is challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – how deeply lost we are, and the speed at which it occurred.

However, we know that the president was legitimately chosen. Following his profoundly alarming first term and following the cautions linked to the awareness of Project 2025 – despite the leader directly said publicly he intended to be a dictator only on the first day – enough Americans selected him rather than Kamala Harris.

As terrifying as the current reality may be, it's more daunting to recognize that we are just nine months into this presidential term. Where will three more years of this downfall find us? And if the three years transforms into an prolonged era, because there is nobody to stop this president from deciding that another term is required, maybe for defense purposes?

Certainly, there is still hope. There are congressional elections in 2026 which might establish an alternate political equilibrium, in case Democrats regain either chamber of parliament. There exist public servants who are trying to impose a degree of oversight, like representatives currently launching an investigation regarding the effort to fund seizure by federal prosecutors.

And a national vote in 2028 could start our journey to recovery just as the prior selection set us on this regrettable path.

There exist millions of Americans marching in the streets across municipalities, like they performed recently at democracy demonstrations.

An ex-cabinet member, commented this week that “the great sleeping giant of America is stirring”, similar to past after the Communist witch-hunt era in the 1950s or amid anti-war demonstrations or in the seventies crisis.

In those instances, the tilting vessel finally returned to balance.

The author states he knows the signals of that resurgence and notices it unfolding at present. For proof, he points to the recent massive protests, the broad, multi-faction opposition regarding a television host's removal and the largely united refusal by journalists to agree to military mandates they only publish approved content.

“The sleeping giant perpetually exists dormant till specific greed grows too toxic, some action so disrespectful of the common good, some brutality so disruptive, that it is compelled except to rise.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will turn out correct.

In the meantime, the major inquiries persist: can America regain its footing? Is it possible to restore its position globally and its devotion to constitutional order?

Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My negative thoughts tells me that the latter is true; that everything could be gone. My hopeful heart, though, tells me that we must try, by any means available.

Personally, as a media critic, that’s about encouraging reporters to live up, more completely, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it could mean participating in congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or developing approaches to safeguard voting rights.

Less than a year ago, we existed in a very different place. In the future? Or in several years? The fact is, we cannot predict. Our sole course is try to continue fighting.

What Provides Me Hope Now

The engagement I have with students with new media professionals, that are simultaneously idealistic and grounded, {always
